Remix Culture

Remix culture, as described by DJ Spooky, plays a big part of the creation and evolution of memes. Most memes are the creation of taking stills, concepts, ideas, and element from pop culture and giving them new meaning. Through the use of photo-editing and video-editing software, mixing, mashing up images, gifs, and videos becomes more accessible for people to meaningfully contribute. Just as individual’s assign value to meme’s based on their own experiences (found objects), by remixing different content, creators can assign new context for objects. A meme’s popularity is often attributed to how recognizeable it is, thus the origin of meme is often derivative from some prexisting work or person. Sometimes the very act of remixing content is the subject of the meme (Autotuned news stories). Meme's are often remixed to tell non linear stories in conjuntion with traditional uses of text
