the economic survival rite of passage
transition into JP Morgan Presentation
The Economic Survival Rite of Passage is an opera / performance ecology / intermedia poesis—for 12 musicians, 4 actors, and 4 dancers— written, composed, and directed by Andruid Kerne. Full credits are here.
Script / Score tells all the performers the sequence of events across the timeline of the performance. Introduces the characters and the zones of the mise-en-scene. Includes staging directions, as well as all words spoken by the actors. Introduces and follows a unique graphical notation system.
The Music Score takes a variey of approaches to instructing the musicians. Each piece begins with a form scheme, which specifies its overall structure, including where parts begin and end, and insights into how they fit together to form a whole.
Sometimes, all the notes are written out. Othertimes, modules for each musician are specified, which get repeated, along with improvisational variations. Aspects of the improvisation get worked out through rehearsals.
Sometimes classical music notation is used. Othertimes, for percussive pieces, aka percussive poetry—in which the scoring is all about rhythm, and doesn't specify pitch—a grid notation is employed.
Choreographer Elissa Daly put together the Timeline, working with Production Manager Mel Lang, initially to give the dancers a shorthand overview of the sequence of elements and their timing. This proved to useful to everyone.s
The Program Notes give credit to all performers, directors, facilitators, creatives, and other assistors, in all capacities.
